How Selection Deadlines Protect a Custom Home Schedule

A practical way to connect client selections with procurement lead times, trade dates, approvals, and the construction schedule.

Selection deadlines protect a custom home schedule when each decision is tied to the date materials must be ordered, the trade that needs the information, and the milestone that cannot proceed without it. A generic finish-by date is not enough; clients need to see the consequence of each decision.

Work backward from installation

Start with the planned installation date, then account for confirmed lead time, review, ordering, delivery, inspection, and a reasonable buffer. The client deadline should occur before the builder’s last possible order date.

Give every selection one owner

Record who presents options, who approves, who orders, and who verifies delivery. One accountable owner prevents a decision from sitting between the designer, client, office, and supplier.

Show the information needed

  • Room and selection category
  • Approved options and allowance
  • Decision deadline
  • Lead time and installation milestone
  • Open questions and responsible person

Escalate before the deadline passes

Send reminders while alternatives still exist. If a preferred product will miss the schedule, document the available substitute, price difference, and decision needed to protect the milestone.

Connect approvals to the live project

Once approved, update purchasing, budget, schedule, and the client record together. HomeBuilder CEO keeps selections and project operations connected so the team does not rebuild the same decision across spreadsheets and inboxes.
