What to Include in a Weekly Custom Home Client Update

A practical weekly update format that keeps custom home clients informed about progress, decisions, schedule risks, and next steps.

A useful weekly client update answers five questions: what finished, what happens next, which decisions are due, what changed, and whether the budget or schedule is at risk. Sending the same structured update on the same day each week reduces status calls and gives the builder, client, office, and field team one shared record.

Open with a plain-language project summary

Start with two or three sentences describing the current phase and overall condition of the job. Avoid a list of trade abbreviations. Clients should understand the state of their home without interpreting a construction schedule.

Show completed work with evidence

List the meaningful work completed since the last update and attach a small set of labeled photos. Choose images that explain progress, confirm concealed work before it is covered, or document an issue that needs a decision.

Preview the next two weeks

The coming week is useful, but a two-week lookahead gives clients time to prepare for walkthroughs, selections, deposits, and access needs. Note dependencies such as weather, inspection results, material arrival, or completion by another trade.

Make every client decision actionable

  • Decision and affected room or scope
  • Options or supporting documents
  • Budget difference when known
  • Schedule impact
  • Named owner and firm due date

A decision without a due date is only a reminder. Explain what happens if the deadline passes, especially when procurement or the next trade depends on approval.

Report budget and schedule changes directly

Separate approved changes from potential changes. State the current target milestone, any movement since last week, and the reason. If pricing is still being collected, label it as pending instead of presenting an estimate as final.

Keep the update connected to the project record

Store the update with current selections, approvals, change orders, and schedule data. HomeBuilder CEO gives builders one place to prepare consistent client communication without rebuilding the facts from texts, spreadsheets, and inboxes every Friday.
